The Canadian Model Forest concept is a national program initiative of Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service. The Western Newfoundland Model Forest (WNMF), located on Newfoundland’s west coast, is one of 11 Model Forests across Canada and 18 international Model Forests in countries such as Argentina, Sweden, and Mexico. The WNMF exists to deliver realistic and innovative approaches in sustainable forest management (SFM) within Newfoundland and Labrador and nationally.

A Model Forest is an area that reflects a variety of ecological, social and economic values and is used as a testing ground where SFM practices are developed, tested and shared. The WNMF refers to both a geographic area and a specific group of partners working together to advance SFM.

The work of the WNMF and its partners is intended to demonstrate a shared commitment to the pursuit of SFM, and to be an example - like a “model citizen”- others can learn and benefit from.

Each Model Forest is run by a not-for-profit organization, and, except for a small administrative staff, partners involved in the organization donate their time, expertise, and additional financial support to projects. At the heart of each Model Forest is a group of partners with their own perspectives on the social, economic and environmental dynamics within the forest. Recognizing and understanding these perspectives is necessary to making informed and fair decisions about how to manage forest resources. The diverse group of partners at the WNMF table work together to understand and appreciate members’ diverse opinions on forest management issues.
