2011 National Forest Week Geocaching Contest!

The Provincial Forest Sector Communications Group, an umbrella group made up from volunteers from the Department of Natural Resources, the Model Forest of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadian Forest Service, Canadian Institute of Forestry, College of the North Atlantic, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and MUN/SWGC are pleased to offer people around the province a chance to celebrate National Forest Week, have fun in the great outdoors and win some cool prizes as well!

Geocaching is a fun, family friendly game of high tech hide and seek in which caches (small plastic containers) are hidden around the province with the GPS coordinates noted and then published.  People using a GPS unit and provided with hints about the area, seek out these caches and like many things, the fun is in the journey.  The caches are hidden in all sorts of places, and for this particular event, we have tried to include locations with a decidedly forestry theme.  As an example, the Bishops Fall geocache is situated near Blanchard's Cabinets and Doors  Ltd while the Grand Falls  cache is hidden on the beautiful Corduroy Brook Nature Trail.  Caches are hidden in urban and rural areas and all are easy to find, if you look in the right places!

For our contest, the rules are very easy, just find the cache and written on the container, is a unique serial number and instructions to email that number to the address provided.  One email per person, per cache is an entry to the contest and at the contests end, a random draw of all the entries will be made for prizes.  Prize details will be announced soon, and they will be good ones!

The contest runs until Oct 31st, 2011, approximately 6 weeks so people should have enough time to seek out multiple cache locations if desired.  A decision was made to make the Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association (ACGA) website the main base for the locations and coordinates for the contest as it is the nerve center for geocaching in Atlantic Canada and in particular Newfoundland and Labrador.  The link for the site is provided below.

Have fun with the contest and as you participate, keep a thought about the reason the contest is being offered; a recognition of the beauty and importance of our forests and forest industries to all of Newfoundland and Labrador!
