Partners in Sustainable Forest Management

WNMF chosen as Forest Communities Program site

The Western Newfoundland Model Forest (WNMF) Partnership has been named one of 11 successful sites under Natural Resources Canada’s new Forest Communities Program (FCP). Peter MacKay, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced the $25-million, five-year program in Green Hill, NS on Saturday, July 7 on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn.

The 11 program sites were chosen from 58 proposals received nation-wide. Under the new program, the WNMF will be expanding its ongoing work with communities to deal with emerging issues facing the natural resource sector, and, along with its current partners, will engage new forest community networks in five regions: White Bay South, Humber Valley to Gros Morne Corridor, Great Northern Peninsula, Labrador/Nitassinan, and Eastern Newfoundland. The FCP is based on the successes of Canada's Model Forest Program, which began in 1992 and ends this year.

For more information on the FCP, please visit the Natural Resources Canada website.

The Western Newfoundland Model Forest (WNMF) is a partnership of diverse stakeholders dedicated to sustaining Newfoundland and Labrador’s natural forest resources for the benefit and use of all residents, both now and in the future.

Our vision is to manage our use of Newfoundland and Labrador's forests to sustain biodiversity, provide employment and opportunities for recreation, and ensure a healthy environment for years to come.

In Phase 1 (1992-1997) of our program, our activities were focused within a defined boundary in Western Newfoundland. In Phase 2 (1997-2002), our partners provided provincial leadership on sustainable forest management issues including socio-economic concerns.

In Phase 3 of our program (2002-2007), we continued to evolve by focusing on key aspects of our ecosystem and involving the public and stakeholders in sustainable forest management in and beyond our boundaries.

The WNMF Compendium of Reports and Research Projects has been updated, and PDF files of reports from Phases 1, 2 and 3 are now available.

The Annual Report for 2006-07 is available on our Workplan/Annual Report Index.
