Objective
The Environmental Education Institute was an initiative of the Western Newfoundland Model Forest Education Working Group, coordinated by the Centre for Forest and Environmental Studies. It was designed to provide teachers from across Newfoundland with a better understanding of the environment, particularly as it relates to forest issues and integrated resource management.

Description
The first Environmental Education Institute was a six-day seminar held at Killdevil Lodge, Gros Morne National Park, from August 18 to August 23, 1996. The focus of the institute was forest and integrated resource management, with an emphasis on the role of the Western Newfoundland Model Forest in developing and promoting its Integrated Resource Management Plan. There were a number of in-services, guided tours, presentations and discussions throughout the seminar, all in an effort to expand teachers’ awareness and understanding of the environment, and provide them with the tools needed to incorporate environmental education into classroom activities. This institute has since been presented during the summers of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
