GEOREFERENCING NON-TIMBER VALUES

2001- 2002

Keywords
Non-Timber values, ArcView, Forest Management District, Survey

Objective
To locate and record non-timber values in the Forest Management District (FMD) 15 area. The project then references these values through digital mapping using ArcView software.

Description
The Western Newfoundland Model Forest has produced two components of this mapping exercise. A manual for individuals chosen to conduct surveys in the field also contains the Non-Timber Values Survey that spatially defines locations of non-timber values identified by the public. The second component is a training manual geared toward the forestry professional and GIS technician. This component explains how to process the information gathered in the field and how to incorporate this information into a functional GIS database. This database can assist digitally reference non-timber values and provide forestry planning teams with a tool to aid them in their forest management strategies.

Values were determined through public surveys. Approximately 29 non-timber values were identified including consumptive and non-consumptive values. Values were documented on maps which were then digitized. The result is spatially-referenced non-timber values that can be used in conjunction with other GIS layers for the development of forest management plans that consider social, economic and ecological sustainability of forest resources.
