THE CANADIAN MODEL FOREST NETWORK: LOCAL LEVEL INDICATORS GAP ANALYSIS
Western Newfoundland Model Forest
April 1998 - March 1999
Keywords
Indicators, SFM, Analysis
Objective
To summarize the state of development and application of Local Level Indicators
at each of the eleven Model Forest sites across Canada, to assess the achievements
to date, to identify needs, barriers and challenges, and to recommend options
and opportunities for future actions.
Description
Each Model Forest in Canada entered its second phase with a commitment to develop,
measure and report on appropriate Local Level Indicators of Sustainable Forest
Management. Work is currently proceeding at a steady rate in all Model Forests.
Local Level Indicators are being used by various Model Forests or their partners
to: build computer forecasting models; develop, review and assess management
plans; identify targets or thresholds; develop management objectives; obtain
certification; guide further research; assess the overall state of Sustainable
Forest Management; and assess the impact that the Model Forest is having. Model
Forests and their partnerships now have a much better understanding of how Local
Level Indicators can be an essential aspect of Sustainable Forest Management,
and how they can be used to help sharpen the focus of the work being carried
out by Model Forests.
