Objective
To determine public opinion on the forest and forest management practices in western Newfoundland; the public’s views on a number of current forest issues in western Newfoundland; the uses of the forests by the public, opinions on public involvement in forest management, and the public’s knowledge of the Western Newfoundland Model Forest.

Description
This project involved the design and implementation of a survey used to determine the attitudes and opinions of the people, who live in and around the Western Newfoundland Model Forest, on Sustainable Forest Management issues. Fifty-six questions were included on the questionnaire which was mailed out to six hundred and thirty-three (633) persons residing in western Newfoundland. Although it was found that the majority of residents in western Newfoundland do not understand the concept of Sustainable Forest Management, a large number of respondents felt that there have been significant improvements in forest harvesting practices in western Newfoundland over the past five years.
