Tundra Dwarf
Birch, Betula glandulosa Michx.
Height: A depressed or erect shrub up to 2 m high.
Twigs:
Smooth or with a few small hairs, and are covered with glandular
dots. Older bark is dark brown and shiny, and has scattered lenticels.
Leaves:
Alternate, oval, round or inversely ovate, 1-2.5 cm long, irregularly
and coarsely toothed, shiny, mostly hairless, and leathery on surfaces,
dark green above and paler beneath.
Cones:
Erect, on long stalks, oblong and 1-1.5 cm long. Bracts
have 3 ascending lobes. The wings are narrow less than have the
width of the nutlet.
Habitat:
Found on windswept barrens, hillsides and mountains of
western, west-central and northern Newfoundland, and Labrador.
