Wintergreen,
Gaultheria procumbens L.,
Height:
An evergreen, creeping shrub, with ascending flowering branches,
8-12 cm high, and leafy at the top.
Leaves:
2.5-5 cm long, elliptical, leathery, and obscurely toothed.
Flowers:
Small, nodding white bells occurring singly or a few to a cluster.
Fruit:
Bright red and fleshy, edible, spicy and many-seeded. Ripen
in the fall and persist throughout the winter.
Habitat:
Found in Newfoundland, being restricted to a few dry, sandy
areas in the central part of the island.
