The
Western Newfoundland Model Forest has been working closely
with District #3 School Board for the past 10 years. This
collaboration has led to a number of events that aim to share
the message of sustainable forest and environmental management
with our youth.
Some of
our shared projects:
Summer
Institute in Environmental Education: An
annual five-day workshop held in Gros Morne National Park.
Teachers in all disciplines explore the values of outdoor
education and learn how to translate these values to their
students. Click here for
more information.
Schoolyard
Naturalization: An ongoing project to enhance
school yards in the Corner Brook area. By making our school
yards safer and more aesthetically pleasing to students, we
help promote healthy, outdoor activity and appreciation for
the natural environment.
High
school curriculum: We have been working with the
district to develop Ecosystems 1206, a high school curriculum
to be implemented throughout the province that focuses on
issues relevant to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Themes reflect current issues in environmental education such
as the boreal forest, the Newfoundland marten, and carbon
accounting/climate change issues.
Envirothon:
We have helped spearhead and continue to run the annual Envirothon
in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This competition
brings students together to test their knowledge of environmental
issues, and gives them the opportunity to represent their
province at international competition. Click here
for more information.
Regional
Science Fair Awards: We provide an annual cash prize,
as well as reference material, to winners of the province’s
regional high school science fairs. Click here
for more information. |
