Sustainable
Forest Management Training
for Front Line Forest Workers
In an effort
to ensure that forest workers are more knowledgeable about the impact
they have on the environment during their daily working activities,
the WNMF partnership developed a training package that addresses
environmentally sensitive harvesting practices and is applicable
to all front line forest workers in the province.
The training
consists of three modules. Module 1 is consistent with the Canadian
Forestry Association’s Logging for Wildlife Program and is
revised to suit Newfoundland. The second module allows incorporates
partners’ specific Standard Operating Procedures. The third
module reviews the guidelines and regulations set out by the Newfoundland
and Labrador Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods.
A Train the
Trainer workshop was also developed as part of this package. Partner
agencies identified trainers who are familiar with the social, cultural
and economic conditions of Newfoundland. They were then trained
to deliver the program to front line workers.
The Newfoundland
Forest Service, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd., and Abitibi-Consolidated
Company of Canada Inc. have all used this package, and the two pulp
and paper companies used the training to fulfill part of the requirements
for their ISO 14001 Environmental Management System registration.
